Liverpool (9 titles)

Liverpool currently hold the most number of League Cup Final wins, lifting the trophy nine times.

The Reds won the EFL Cup for the first time in 1981, beating West Ham in the final.

They successfully defended the title in 1982, 1983, and 1984 for a historic 'four-peat'.

Liverpool waited 11 years to win their fifth League Cup, taking home the title in the 1995 edition. Steve McManaman scored twice in the final to lead the Reds to a 2-1 victory over Bolton.

Liverpool’s sixth EFL Cup win came in 2001, part of a historic treble for the club. The Reds also won the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup that year.

They won the tournament again in 2003, with Liverpool defeating arch-rivals Manchester United in the final, 2-0. Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen scored the goals in that contest.

It took nine years before Liverpool added to their League Cup haul. They defeated Cardiff City in the 2012 final, beating them 3-2 in a penalty shootout.

Liverpool’s last EFL Cup win came in 2022. The Reds captured the Carabao Cup title that year after beating Chelsea in a dramatic penalty shootout.

The Reds defeated the Blues 11-10 on penalties, with Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga the only player to miss a spot kick in the shootout.

Manchester City (8 titles)

Manchester City are second on the list, winning the League Cup eight times in their history.

The bulk of those titles came with City under the ownership of the Abu Dhabi group. They won six EFL Cups in an eight-year stretch from 2014 to 2021.

Manchester City’s first League Cup triumph came in 1970 when they defeated West Bromwich Albion 2-1 in the final.

City captured their second League Cup title in 1976, beating Newcastle United 2-1 in the final.

They waited 38 years to win their third League Cup, taking home the title in the 2014 edition. City came from behind to win 3-1 in the final, with Yaya Toure, Samir Nasri, and Jesus Navas the goalscorers for the champions.

Their fourth EFL Cup win came in 2016, with City beating Liverpool 3-1 in a penalty shootout in the final.

Pep Guardiola joined the club that year and made City a dominant force in this competition.

He led Manchester City to four straight Carabao Cup titles from 2018 to 2021 to increase their trophy haul in this tournament to eight.

Manchester United (6 titles)

The Red Devils have the third-most wins in this competition with six. They first won the League Cup title in 1992, beating Nottingham Forest 1-0 in the final.

United waited 14 years to win their second League Cup, bringing home the title in the 2006 edition.

Wayne Rooney scored twice, while Cristiano Ronaldo and Louis Saha added the other goals for United in their 4-0 win over Wigan.

The Red Devils captured the crown again in 2009, beating Tottenham 4-1 on penalties in the final.

They successfully defended the title in 2010, beating Aston Villa in the final, which commemorated the 50th anniversary of the League Cup.

United claimed their fifth EFL Cup in 2017, beating Southampton 3-2 in a thrilling final. Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice, including the match-winner in the 87th minute.

Erik ten Hag gave United a trophy in his first season with the club, leading the Red Devils to a Carabao Cup title last February.

They defeated Newcastle United 2-0 in the final, per The Guardian.

Garnacho copies Ronaldo celebration

Sports Brief recently reported on Alejandro Garnacho copying Ronaldo's celebration in United's win over Crystal Palace.

The Argentine star mimicked Ronaldo's celebration after scoring a goal in the 21st minute.

He pointed to the ground to celebrate United's opener, a gesture that Ronaldo introduced during the latter parts of his career in Europe.
