  • Opta previously backed Man City to retain their EPL title at the end of the season
  • At the time, the reigning champs were unbeaten after six rounds of EPL matches
  • However, Arsenal are now leading the Premier League log, with Liverpool second

Sports data company, Opta previously predicted where every Premier League team could finish at the end of the season.

At the time, six rounds of matches had already been played, with some familiar patterns emerging from them.

Reigning champions, Manchester City seemed the favourites to retain their top flight title after a hot start to the campaign.

However, the Citizens are now in somewhat unfamiliar territory in third place on the table, with the Gunners leading and Liverpool in second.

As Sports Brief recently reported, Arsenal claimed the top spot after the Reds and Man City played out to a thrilling one-all draw at Anfield.

When Opta made EPL prediction

According to the data last September, as cited by GiveMeSport, the Citizens were given an 89.5% chance to retain the crown, with Liverpool predicted to finish second ahead of Arsenal in third.

Manchester United, who had endured a frustrating start to the season and saw only minor respite later on in the campaign, were given no chance to seal a UEFA Champions League spot.

Erik ten Hag's charges were instead predicted to finish eighth in the EPL standings, behind the likes of Newcastle United, Brighton and Hove Albion, Tottenham Hotspur, and Aston Villa.

Elsewhere, Chelsea were expected to finish 13th at the end of the season, according to the Opta supercomputer, although their fortunes have seen a slim improvement in recent games.

Arsenal, Liverpool, City's remaining fixtures

Sports Brief also recently analysed the remaining Premier League fixtures for Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City.

The three English powerhouses are locked in a narrow battle for the title, with only one point separating first and third.
