  • The tennis superstar said he wishes to play a match with the two Ballon d’Or winners
  • Djokovic defeated Russia's Daniil Medvedev in the final of the 2023 US Open on Sunday

Novak Djokovic has a dream five-a-side football team that he wishes to play in when he is not winning Grand Slam titles on the tennis court.

The Serbian, who is a huge football fan, won his 24th Grand Slam title on September 10, defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final of the 2023 US Open to become the man with the most majors in tennis.

According to Sportskeeda, Djokovic named some iconic names, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, when asked about the football stars he would love to team up with for a match.

"Wow, that's a tough one. I got to pick more than one. [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic is a dear friend of mine, so I'd love to play with him and obviously Messi, Ronaldo, and from the older guys, [Gabriel] Batistuta."

It is worth noting that the Serbian ace only mentioned four names, perhaps leaving the other to the imagination.

Djokovic was recently pictured with Messi in the United States when two of the greatest sports stars ever seen came together in New York before Inter Miami’s MLS game against the New York Red Bulls.

Djokovic hails Messi as 'phenomenon'

Meanwhile, Messi is regarded as 'a phenomenon' by Djokovic, who claims he and the Argentine World Cup winner discussed 'everything' at their most recent meeting, GOAL reports.

The Serbian tennis star acknowledged the Argentine as a champion and someone he has huge respect for due to the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s achievements in football.

Messi was in the Big Apple while on MLS duty with Inter Miami, while tennis icon Djokovic was chasing down US Open glory at Flushing Meadows when both superstars met in New York.

Djokovic on chat with Messi

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Djokovic being in awe of Messi after the two met in Miami and had a 15-minute chat, the details of which the tennis star has now revealed.

The mercurial Argentine star has been lighting it up for Inter Miami since he moved to Major League Soccer after bringing an end to his two-year spell at Paris Saint-Germain.

Messi has helped the statistically worst team in the American top flight league become the winners of the inaugural Leagues Cup, beating Nashville SC on penalties in the final.
