Argentina fans are waiting with bated breath to see whether Lionel Messi will play against Bolivia in Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier.

They cheered on the football legend, whose status for the game against Bolivia remains uncertain at this stage.

Messi stars in win over Ecuador

Messi starred for Argentina in their 1-0 win over Ecuador on Thursday, scoring the game’s only goal in the 78th minute.

He sent the fans inside Estadio Monumental into a frenzy when he gave Argentina the lead after his free kick went over the wall and into the back of the net.

He set alarm bells ringing, however, in the 89th minute of that contest when he asked to be substituted.

La Albiceleste coach Lionel Scaloni told reporters after the match that Messi asked to be replaced because he "felt something."

Inter Miami coach Gerardo Martino eased fans’ concerns when talking about Messi’s condition before their game against Sporting Kansas City, saying that he doesn’t think he sustained a serious injury during the win against Ecuador.

Will Messi play against Bolivia?

When asked about the possibility of Messi not traveling to Bolivia for the World Cup qualifier and returning to Miami quickly instead, Martino said he doubted that would happen.

A lot has changed since Martino issued that statement. According to reports from local media, Scaloni is considering making several changes to his starting lineup for the match against Bolivia.

One player they are keeping a close eye on is Messi. Even though the results of the medical exam reportedly cleared him of any injury, Scaloni and his backroom staff are still concerned by his heavy workload recently.

The 36-year-old has played 12 matches in the last 48 days since moving to Inter Miami back in July.

Messi equals Luis Suarez’s record

Messi made history yet again with his free-kick goal against Ecuador.

Sports Brief reported that he equaled Luis Suarez’s record for the most goals scored in South America’s World Cup qualifiers.

The former Barcelona teammates have scored 29 goals apiece in World Cup qualifying matches in South America.
