  • Victor Osimhen helped Napoli to their first Serie A title in 33 years last season
  • The Nigerian striker hit 26 league goals and was awarded the golden boot for his exploits
  • He is highly loved by Neapolitans and often gets mobbed by fans wanting autographs

Victor Osimhen was overwhelmed by the love from Napoli fans, much so that he got agitated and engaged in a skirmish with them when trying to leave training today.

Osimhen is fondly referred to as the prince of Naples after helping the club to their first Serie A title in 33 years last season; the last was won by Diego Maradona in the 1989/90 season.

According to Goal, he became the first African footballer to win the golden boot in Italy; in the same season, he broke Samuel Etoo's record for most goals by an African in a single season with his 26 goals.

He also surpassed and broke George Weah's record for the highest-scoring African football in the Italian league. The Ballon d'Or winner scored 46, while the title winner has hit 50.

Osimhen overwhelmed by Napoli fans

The Nigerian striker has won the heart of the fans with his exploits for the club, and he enjoys love all around in the city of Naples, but sometimes it could get overwhelming.

According to a video recirculated on Twitter by Eurofoot, the 24-year-old was mobbed by fans who wanted pictures and autographs as he was trying to exit the training facilities in his car.

It got heated, and no matter how much he vented his frustration, they kept shouting no and were not willing to let him leave until he meet their demands.

The striker was tipped to leave the club this summer but turned down multiple offers, including a lucrative deal from Saudi Arabia, and is set to sign a new contract.

Osimhen favourite for African best

Sports Brief previously analysed Osimhen as favourite to win African Best award later this year as he leads other contenders for Africa's biggest individual prize.

He helped Napoli win the Scudetto and reach the quarter-final of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in the club's history.
