Billion Dollar Boehly: How Chelsea’s Owner Spent $1.04B on Player Transfers in Just 1 Year

Todd Boehly has been spending like crazy since buying Chelsea from Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich last year.

He has spent more than a billion dollars to bolster the Blues’ lineup during the first three transfer windows he has been in charge of as Chelsea owner.

Sports Brief looks at the players Chelsea have acquired during this period.

Summer 2022 signings

Boehly wanted to impress the Chelsea fanbase after buying the London club in the summer of 2022, spending $308.7 million to sign eight players during the transfer window.

The Blues signed Wesley Fofana from Leicester City for $88 million, Marc Cucurella from Brighton for $71.5 million, Raheem Sterling from Manchester City for $61.5 million, Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli for $41.6 million, Carney Chukwuemeka from Aston Villa for $19.7 million, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona for $13.1 million, and Gabriel Slonina from Chicago Fire for $10 million.

They also paid a $3.3 million loan fee for Juventus’ Denis Zakaria, per Bleacher Report.

January 2023 signings

Chelsea continued their spending spree last January, shelling out $360.6 million to sign eight players during the transfer window.

The Blues broke the British transfer record with their Enzo Fernandez acquisition, paying Benfica $132.5 million to land one of Argentina’s heroes in the 2022 World Cup.

They also hijacked Arsenal’s bid for Mykhailo Mudryk, signing the Ukrainian from Shakhtar Donetsk for $76.6 million.

Chelsea also signed Benoit Badiashile from Monaco for $41.6 million, Noni Madueke from PSV for $38.3 million, Malo Gusto from Lyon for $32.8 million, Andrey Santos from Vasco da Gama for $13.7 million, and David Datro Fofana from Molde for $13.1 million.

They also paid a $12 million loan fee for Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix.

Summer 2023 signings

The Blues continued splashing the cash this summer after finishing 12th in the Premier League last season, forking out $373.2 million to sign seven players.

They smashed the British transfer record again on Monday, signing Moises Caicedo from Brighton for $146.1 million, per Yahoo Sports.

Chelsea also signed Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig for $65.7 million, Axel Disasi from Monaco for $50 million, Nicolas Jackson from Villarreal for $40 million, Lesley Ugochukwu from Rennes for $30 million, Robert Sanchez from Brighton for $25 million, and Angelo Gabriel from Santos for $16.4 million.

Premier League title favourites

Sports Brief recently reported on the favourites to win the Premier League this season.

Bookmakers installed Manchester City as -150 favourites to win the title again.

The Blues' odds of winning the championship are priced at +1400.
