  • Casemiro praised Lionel Messi in a recent interview with a Brazilian journalist
  • The Man United star named Messi one of the greatest players of his generation
  • Casemiro also included ex-teammate Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar on his list

Manchester United midfielder, Casemiro, knows fully well the brilliance of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

He played with Ronaldo at Real Madrid and waged countless battles against Messi during his time with Barcelona in La Liga.

Unsurprisingly, the Brazilian star named the two football icons among the three greatest players of his generation.

The topic was brought up during an interview with Brazilian journalist, Luiz Felipe Castro, of Placar TV.

Greatest players for Casemiro

Apart from Ronaldo and Messi, Casemiro also included Brazil teammate, Neymar, on his list of greatest players.

He said he was not able to watch the likes of Diego Maradona or Pele play, but he enjoyed watching the three other stars, who he called 'the three greatest players of his generation'.

Casemiro forged a partnership with Ronaldo during their time at Real Madrid, combining for seven goals during the 122 matches they played together.

He also spent some time with Neymar in Brazil’s national team, with the two stars playing 53 matches together. They combined for two goals for the Selecao.

Casemiro praises his rival Messi

During the same interview, he paid tribute to Messi, saying that everyone who loves football is fond of the Argentine superstar.

Casemiro expounded more on the Inter Miami star’s greatness, saying:

“Messi made an era and was always competitive with Barcelona and Argentina; there was no way out.”

Casemiro and Messi faced each other 20 times in the Spanish league and on the international stage, with the former Barca star scoring nine goals in those matches.

The Red Devil continued heaping praise on the 2022 World Cup winner, saying:

“I always like to say, ‘Whoever likes football will like Messi.’ It was a pleasure to play against him.”

Casemiro and Messi: future teammates?

He added that it is unfortunate that he was not able to have an opportunity to play together with Messi.

Casemiro is plying his trade in the Premier League with Manchester United, while Messi has just made a blockbuster move to Major League Soccer with Inter Miami.

However, who knows what the future could hold?

How the MLS season works

Sports Brief recently reported on how the 2023 MLS season works, since it does not make use of a promotion or relegation system.

Two major titles are awarded by the US league every year: one each for the playoffs champion and for the regular season's winner.
