  • Lionel Messi has won one final award before leaving European football
  • The Argentine star was named Ligue 1's best foreign player of the season
  • Messi netted 16 times in the French league and provided 16 goal assists

Argentine captain, Lionel Messi, has been adjudged the best foreign player in Ligue 1 of the 2022/23 campaign.

The 36-year-old notched 16 league goals and provided 16 assists for Paris Saint-Germain in the French top division last term.

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner, who won the 2022 World Cup midway through the season, aided the Parisians in winning the Ligue 1 title before signing with Major League Soccer side, Inter Miami.

Despite switching Europe for America, Messi was still named the French league's top foreign player for 2022/23 by supporters on Monday, according to Ligue 1's social media channels.

There is a case to be made that PSG, who finished just a point clear of second-placed Lens, might not have won the top flight crown for the 11th time without the Argentine maestro.

Lionel Messi's trophies in France

Messi, who joined PSG from Barcelona in 2021, scored 32 goals in 75 games across all competitions during his two seasons in the French capital.

According to Diario AS, FIFA's The Best award-winner won three trophies with the Parisians, including the French Super Cup last August and Ligue 1 twice. The only domestic trophy he failed to win was the Coupe de France.

Messi will probably rue assisting the team in capturing back-to-back league titles but being unable to lead them to their first UEFA Champions League victory.

Messi leaves Europe for America

As reported by Daily Mail, Messi turned down an offer to return to Barcelona in order to play in the United States, as well as a highly lucrative offer to join Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League.

After reaching an agreement on a contract that will reportedly pay $60 million annually through to December 2025, the World Cup winner is expected to debut for Inter Miami this July.

Messi makes acting debut

Sports Brief also reported on Messi picking up new hobbies as he winds down his footballing career, which has seen him reap success at a club and an international level.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has won all accolades there are in football, including the Champions League and, most recently, the FIFA World Cup with Argentina.

Messi also made his acting debut in the popular Argentine TV series, Los Protectores, whose story revolves around three football agents who are in dire need of money.
