  • Chelsea have officially announced the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as head coach
  • The Argentine tactician has signed a two-year contract with an option for another year
  • He will officially take over from July 1 and spearhead a summer clearout of Blues players

Chelsea put an end to a long wait and officially confirmed their new manager, Mauricio Pochettino, ending weeks of speculation over their man for next season.

The Argentine will formally take charge on July 1 but will offer valuable inputs into player sales and recruitment when the market opens on June 14.

He will take over after a grossly underwhelming season in which the Blues had four managers oversee at least a game and still finished 12th in the Premier League - their worst result since 1988.

Pochettino will also take on a bloated squad with over 30 first-team stars, after the club spent over £600 million on 16 new players with no significant impact.

Details of Pochettino’s Chelsea contract

Todd Boehly and his cohorts appeared to have learned a vital lesson from their appointment of Graham Potter, whom they handed a five-year contract last year.

Pochettino will not be on a longer term. As confirmed by Chelsea’s official statement, he signed a two-year contract which includes an option of another year by the club.

According to Goal, the club only paid £13 mil as compensation to Potter, even though he could have earned over £50 mil if he had insisted on the entire length of his contract payout.

Boehly admitted to making mistakes in his first year as part-owner, and insider sources claimed he regretted sacking Thomas Tuchel, ruling it a decision made too early.

Pochettino will be joined by Jesus Perez, Miguel d’Agostino, Toni Jimenez, and Sebastiano Pochettino as backroom staff at Stamford Bridge heading into next season.

Four priorities for Pochettino

It would not be an overstatement to say Poch is taking over a mess at Chelsea. Despite the heavy investment and bloated squad, the team is imbalanced.

As Sport Brief reported, there are four urgent priorities Pochettino must address in his first weeks as the new boss, which would be vital to his success.

The goalkeeper, defensive midfield, attacking midfield, and striker are four positions requiring immediate resolution, including sales and recruitment.
