  • Mauricio Pochettino’s appointment is only an official confirmation away
  • The Argentine has agreed to all terms with Chelsea including a long contract
  • He has a big job on his hands and must be proactive in his first few days in office

It is only a matter of time before the usual theme “club statement” is announced on Chelsea’s official channels for the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as head coach.

According to multiple reports in the English media, the former Paris Saint-Germain has agreed a long-term deal with the Blues to become the permanent manager from next season.

Frank Lampard will step down from his role as caretaker manager after the game against Newcastle United on the season’s final day.

Poch has a big job on his hands. Sports Brief looks at the most pressing four key positions where Chelsea are lacking quality despite having quantity.

1. Goalkeeper

Edouard Mendy is all but confirmed to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season. He rejected a contract offer due to a wage dispute, and talks have cooled down. Kepa Arrizabalaga will also be allowed to leave if a suitable offer comes in.

According to The Telegraph, the Blues have identified Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana as their priority target. Inter Milan wants £40m to part ways with the goalkeeper they signed just a season ago.

2. Defensive midfield

This is one of the most crucial roles for Chelsea to recruit for next summer—Enzo Fernandez, who cost the club £106.8m in January, fares better as an advanced midfielder.

Several players have been identified, including Declan Rice, Moises Caicedo, Manuel Ugarte, Manu Kone and Romeo Lavia, with the club looking to sign at least two, with possible departures of Mateo Kovacic and N’golo Kante on the cards.

3. Attacking midfield

This is a position Chelsea are not lacking in numbers, not quality, but are overstaffed and need to move some players on. Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech and loan star João Felix can fill the role in the current team.

Mount could leave, Ziyech will go, while the futures of Havertz and Felix hang in the balance. Christopher Nkunku will join in the summer, as confirmed by RB Leipzig’s sporting director to Sports Mole.

4. Striker

This is an area Chelsea are lacking. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will leave at the end of the season. Havertz has proven not to be a reliable striker. Armando Broja is returning from a severe injury, while David Fofana could be loaned out.

As reported by Calcio Mercato earlier today, Lukaku, whom Poch admired and wanted at Chelsea, has ordered his lawyers to find a solution so he can stay one more season at Inter Milan.

Chelsea stars ready for Pochettino

Sports Brief reported that Chelsea stars reacted positively to Pochettino’s imminent arrival at the club ahead of next season.

The players believe that the former Tottenham boss is the right man for the job and has the exemplary character to lead the team to glory in the coming years.
