  • Chelsea are well poised to win the 2023/2024 Premier League title if you believe in fantasy
  • There are some series of interesting coincidences that show a pattern of Chelsea's likely triumph next season
  • Given their poor performance this season, it will take a lot of work to turn these theories into a reality

No one saw this coming. If someone had told you at the start of the season that Chelsea would finish in the bottom half of the table, you won't have believed them.

How could a team that had just splashed over 200 million euros on new players perform so poorly? How could Thomas Tuchel, a proven winner, allow that to happen?

Only that it did happen and the Blues are set to record their worst-ever finish in 29 years. But chin up, Chelsea fans, there is a silver lining.

A staunch Chelsea fan, CFCDUBois, has come up with interesting narratives that suggest next season's English Premier League title is theirs for the taking.

Football doesn't follow such a straight line, especially with the kind of rebuild needed at the club, but whatever makes Chelsea fans sleep at night, huh? Sports Brief takes a look at some of these coincidences. Some might be far-fetched, but it is always hope that kills.

Three consecutive Premier League titles

The last time a team completed a three-peat in the Premier League, Chelsea won the title the following season. Manchester United won three consecutive league titles between 2006 and 2009 before Carlo Ancelotti's Chelsea won it in 2010.

United's rivals, Manchester City, won their third title in a row this season.

Guard of honour

Speaking of Manchester City, Chelsea recently mounted a guard of honour for them at the Etihad Stadium before they were handed the Premier League trophy. As history suggests, the Blues use the 'humiliating' exercise to fuel their ambitions next season.

Chelsea previously mounted a guard of honour for a team in the 2015/2016 season when Leicester City defied all odds to win the Premier League. Guess who won the Premier League next season? Antonio Conte's Chelsea.

They also did give Liverpool a guard of honour in the 2019/2022 season. They didn't win the Premier League the following season, but they won the Champions League. However, they won't be in Europe's elite competition next season.

Chelsea's extremely poor season

Conte took a team that had just finished in mid-table when he arrived in 2017. Chelsea had just finished 10th, lacked confidence and with no European football to look forward to. He galvanised all his efforts in winning the Premier League.

Fast-forward to the upcoming season, Chelsea ill have finished in mid-table, they will have a new manager(most probably Mauricio Pochettino), and will not play in Europe next season.

As already explained, the season before Conte took over, Chelsea had a pathetic season. Jose Mourinho was fired and Guus Hiddink took over on an interim basis until the end of the season. In the same season, Burnley won the Championship and got promoted back to the top-flight league and Arsenal finished second behind Leicester City.

The script looks almost the same this season. The only difference is Chelsea used four different managers. Arsenal will finish in second place and Vincent Kompany got Burnley back to the Premier League.

Are you seeing the pattern now?

Mason Mount's potential transfer

The next one will only be a coincidence if the transfer comes to pass. Sport Bible reports that Mason Mount is leaning towards a move to Manchester United.

Mount is a Chelsea two-time player of the year, having won the award back to back. He supplied the assist that won the Champions League in 2021 and missed a crucial penalty in a cup final.

In 2014, Chelsea sold Juan Mata to Manchester United. Like Mount, Mata was a two-time Chelsea Player of the Year and got an assist in the 2012 Champions League final. The Spaniard, however, missed the first penalty of the shootout. The following year after selling Mata, Chelsea won the league.

All that needs to happen to give this theory solid footing is for Mount to seal a move to Old Trafford.

Manchester United wins at Old Trafford

Sticking with Manchester United, the last time the Red Devils beat Chelsea with a 3-0 margin in the Premier League, the West Londoners responded by winning the league the following season. This happened in the 2008/2009 season when Nemanja Vidic, Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov scored a goal a piece at Old Trafford.

On May 25, Erik ten Hag's side won 4-1 - which essentially is a 3-0 margin.

Pochettino will surely have a lot on his hands when he takes over. There is no denying that Chelsea have enormous talent in their squad and can pull off a title win. Theories and histories rarely play a part in football, but no one will blame you for choosing what to believe in.
