They dropped abruptly from second position to seventh, and will no longer have a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

On Monday night, May 22, the Old Lady were handed a 10-point deduction by the appeals court of the Italian Football Federation.

It was discovered that the club made false accounting calculations in their transfer dealings, and pieces of evidence were later found.

Juventus were second on the log and were Champions League-bound. However, they have now dropped to seventh and will not play European football next season, Sky Sports reports.

How it all happened

In January, Juve were docked 15 points and several club board members were handed bans from football activities, including former president, Andrea Agnelli.

The club approached the Italian Olympic Committee, the country's highest sports court, and the 15-point deduction was suspended last month.

The Olympic Committee ordered a retrial and referred it back to the football federation’s appeals court.

Re-trial at appeals court

There was a tense three-hour hearing on Monday. Guiseppe Chine, the federation prosecutor, requested that 11 points be deducted from Juventus.

He also asked that the club be suspended for eight months. In January, he had requested a nine-month suspension for the club.

More so, Chine wanted eight-month bans for seven former Juventus directors, including Pavel Nedved, but they were cleared on Monday. Agnelli and three others had their appeals rejected last month.

Mass resignation at Juve

In November 2022, several club board members tendered their resignations, as they were being investigated by public prosecutors in Turin over alleged false bookkeeping.

The board resigned en masse in November following an investigation by Turin public prosecutors into alleged false bookkeeping.

More charges for Juventus

Former club president, Agnelli and 11 other officials have also been charged with false communications by a company listed on the Milan stock exchange.

The offences are: obstructing watchdog agencies, false billing, and market manipulation.

Last week, Italian officials also charged seven former directors of the club over alleged fraud regarding player salary cuts during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Juventus issue statement

“Juventus Football Club takes note of what was decided by the FIGC Court of Appeal and reserves the right to read the reasons to evaluate a possible appeal to the Guarantee Board at CONI,” the club said, via Football Italia.
“What was established by the fifth instance of judgment in this matter, which began more than a year ago, arouses great bitterness in the club and in its millions of supporters who, in the absence of clear rules, find themselves extremely penalised with the application of sanctions that seem to take into account the principle of proportionality.
“While not ignoring the need for urgency, which Juventus has never shied away from during the proceedings, it is emphasised that these are facts that still have to be evaluated by a judge.”

Pogba injured on Juve return

Sports Brief also reported on how embattled Juventus star, Paul Pogba suffered another injury in his first start for the team since returning over a year ago.

During the Old Lady's clash against Cremonese, the Frenchman went down and had to be substituted after seemingly hurting his thigh muscle.

Coach Allegri expressed disappointment on Pogba's behalf, with the former Manchester United man's season confirmed to be already over.
