  • Arsenal are expected to spend heavily ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window
  • The north Londoners came close to winning the Premier League title this season for the first time since 2004
  • Man City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan and West Ham's Declan Rice are Arsenal's top transfer targets

Mikel Arteta could parade a much-changed Arsenal team from next season if he lands his summer transfer targets.

The Gunners are expected to go all out ahead of the transfer window, with the club keen to recruit world-class players to help them challenge for more titles next term.

The north Londoners came close to winning this season's Premier League title but were beaten to the crown by Manchester City.

Arteta's men had emerged as the firm favourites to be crowned the champions after an incredible campaign that had seen them top the standings for the better part of the season.

However, a string of poor results in the closing stages saw them beaten to the title by Man City.

According to The Guardian, Arsenal lost the title to City on Saturday after their damaging 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest.

Arsenal plotting summer spree

Arsenal's Premier League title loss has heavily been blamed on their lack of squad depth compared to City's.

This has cultivated the need for the club to enter the market for new signings to help reinforce the current squad.

TalkSPORT reports that the midfield has been earmarked as one of the key departments that need strengthening, especially with Granit Xhaka on the verge of quitting the club.

It is understood that Arteta has already drawn up his summer transfer wishlist, with Man City ace Ilkay Gundogan one of his top targets, per The Athletic.

Gundogan will be out of contract at the Etihad Stadium at the end of the season, and it remains unclear what the future holds for him at City.

West Ham skipper Declan Rice is the other play being targeted by Arsenal, alongside Chelsea star Mason Mount.

Real Valladolid teenager Ivan Fresneda has also been heavily linked with a move to north London a move that would jeopardise Ben White's game time.

How Arsenal could line up

Should the Gunners land all four transfer targets, it would be very likely for us to see a completely different team setup next season.

Aaron Ramsdale is sure to keep his place between the sticks after an incredible campaign, with Freneda likely to slot in for Ben White on the right-back.

Gabriel and William Saliba are both expected to continue at the heart of defence, with Oleksandr Zinchenko continuing on the left.

Thomas Partey would suffer the most if Gundogan and Rice complete moves, with the duo expected to start in the midfield alongside the exciting Martin Odegaard.

Gabriel Jesus, who has impressed since he joined the Gunners from City, is expected to continue leading the goal hunt, with Bukayo Saka and Mount joining him in the attack.

Five possible Arsenal exits

Sports Brief reported on five players that could leave Arsenal this summer as Mikel Arteta plans a massive clearout of unwanted stars to allow for new faces.

Club record signing Nicolas Pepe is one of the players who will leave, while high-flying youngster Folarin Balogun could also be set for an exit.

Pablo Mari will stay at Monza after meeting the requirements to make the deal permanent, while Cedric Soares and Reiss Nelson will also be shown the door.
