FootballRating Juventus’ Champions League Chances After Getting Docked 10 Points
- Juventus are still in the race for Champions League football, despite being docked 10 points
- The Old Lady was handed a 15-point deduction in January but the decision was overturned
- Juve's latest points deduction is reportedly as a result of the club’s past transfer dealings
Juventus have been docked 10 points in what is a massive blow to the Turin club, with the season drawing to a close.
On May 22, the Federal Court of Appeal slapped Juventus with the punishment over the club’s past financial dealings.
The ruling was also ill-timed from a Juve point of view, as it came moments before the team faced Empoli in the Serie A - a game which they lost 4-1.
Prior to the ruling, the Old Lady were flying high in Serie A and sat in second place, 17 points behind champions Napoli, according to the BBC.
This is a fresh penalty for the club, which was initially docked 15 points in January. This decision was overturned in April by a tribunal at Italy's Olympic Committee (CONI).
Juventus said they took note of the ban in a statement, adding that they were considering a possible appeal.
"What was established by the fifth instance of judgment in this matter, which began more than a year ago, arouses great bitterness in the club and in its millions of supporters who, in the absence of clear rules, find themselves extremely penalised with the application of sanctions that seem to take into account the principle of proportionality."
Juventus’ Champions League ambitions
After the 10-point deduction, Juventus have now slipped to seventh on the log with only a couple of Serie A games to go.
Prior to the Empoli game, Massimiliano Allegri’s side still stood a solid chance of qualifying for the Champions League, but defeat now leaves them in danger of missing out on European competition altogether.
2 fixtures that will determine whether Man City will win league next weekend
FootballThey are now on 59 points with two games left and will be hoping AC Milan, who have 64 points in fourth place, lose their remaining two games. Interestingly, one of those two games is against Juventus.
Even if Milan lose their remaining two games, Juve still have Atalanta to worry about since La Dea sit fifth with 61 points, with Inter Milan and Monza their remaining two games.
Juventus' Pogba injured on return
Sports Brief also reported on embattled Juventus star, Paul Pogba suffering another injury in his first start for the team since returning over a year ago.
During the Old Lady's clash against Cremonese, the Frenchman went down and had to be substituted, after seemingly hurting his thigh muscle.
Coach Allegri expressed disappointment on Pogba's behalf, with the embattled former Manchester United man's season confirmed to be already over.
