  • Mikel Arteta has always used unconventional methods during his time at Arsenal
  • Arteta turned the Gunners to title contenders for long periods of the campaign before a late collapse
  • He has now bought a new dog in a bid to boost the morale of the squad

In football, the focus is many times pinned on young stars who've come through the blocks to take the league by its horns and excel. Ering Haaland remains the most perfect example in recent times.

The 22-year-old has broken a number of records in the Premier League in his maiden season.

But not much credit goes to young coaches who attempt to go toe-to-toe with the veterans of the game. Mikel Arteta might not be winning the Premier League this season, but the strides he has made with Arsenal are commendable.

Having honed his managerial skills under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Arteta has forged a path of his own in North London. He has used unconventional methods which, at face value, look hilarious, but if this season is anything to go by, have delivered.

It started with him playing the You'll Never Walk Alone anthem at a training session ahead of facing Liverpool away. A packed Anfield stadium is among the most intimidating atmospheres an opponent can play in, and Arteta wanted his players to have a feel of that before playing Jurgen Klopp's men.

Why Arteta 'signed' a dog

As the Times reports, he has now signed a dog to boost morale at training sessions. The dog, a chocolate Labrador, has been christened 'Win' and has been seen 'joining' the players at the London Colney training base.

The Daily Mail adds that Arteta is said to have found out that keeping a pet helps in creating a better mood and reducing stress levels, something he wants for his Arsenal players especially after the title collapse.

Their 3-0 loss to Brighton last weekend ended their hopes, with Manchester City now requiring just one more win to retain their title.

Arteta will be hoping that Win will be a key addition to his side next season, as they make a comeback to the Champions League after seven years out.

PL Manager of the Season

Sports Brief has also reported that the nominees for Premier League Manager of the Season were announced on Thursday afternoon, May 18, with Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola among the standout names on the shortlist.

The two managers have enjoyed an incredible season in the English top flight, with Guardiola on the cusp of leading Manchester City to his fifth Premier League triumph.

On his part, Arteta has helped Arsenal challenge for the domestic crown.
