  • The bid to host the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in South Africa is starting to take shape after the latest developments
  • A delegation from the South African Football Association (SAFA) has met with the Minister for Sport about its ambitious plan
  • If the country wins the rights, it would be its second global showpiece since the legendary 2010 FIFA Men's World Cup

A South African Football Association (SAFA) delegation led by the organisation's president, Danny Jordaan has met with Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Zizi Kodwa in Cape Town.

Minister Kodwa's department hosted a budget vote networking session and post-budget activation where SAFA gave him a timeline for South Africa’s bid to host the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Monyepao said the occasion was an opportunity to showcase the association’s plans to welcome the world, adding:

"The aim of being here was for us to meet the Minister and brief him about the timelines for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup bid, with May 19, 2023 being the closest date, because we have to submit the bid agreement. We wanted to make the Minister aware of our intention to do this so that FIFA can give us the bid documents."

According to a report by SuperSport, FIFA required member associations to confirm their interest in bidding to host the World Cup by submitting the bidding agreement by May 19.

Should this long-shot bid succeed, South Africa would host its second senior world cup since the iconic and historic 2010 men's edition.

World Cup ambassador search starts

In related coverage, Sports Brief previously reported that SAFA was seeking an ambassador for the country's planned FIFA World Cup 2027 bid.

Whispers suggested the likes of Kaizer Chiefs marketing director, Jessica Motaung and broadcasting legend, Carol Tshabalala are being considered.
