  • An Arsenal fan has gone viral for using a clever metric to argue who deserves the Premier League more
  • The Gunners have been toppled at the top by Manchester City after The Citizens’ 2-1 win over Fulham
  • The fan argued his team has stayed top of the Premier League longer, and that should count for something

Imagine if your favourite club was accorded the Premier League title by merit of staying at the top for a large chunk of the season.

This is exactly the line of reasoning by one Arsenal fan, who could not accept that Manchester City reclaimed top spot for the first time in more than 100 days.

While there is no doubt Arsenal have had a tremendous season by their own standards, it is a bit disheartening to imagine they have blown what was once an eight-point gap at the top.

As a matter of fact, the Gunners have been so dominant in the league this season that no other club has been top of the table longer than them this campaign.

As reported on SportBible, this stat has led to one Twitter user coming up with an interesting metric to determine a Premier League winner.

The user, identified as Harry Fong, went on social media with an interesting take, saying:

“This is what I mean. City will be “crowned” champions despite them being top of the table for no more than a fleeting moment of the season. We need to reassess how we distribute honours, because teams are being failed by the archaic 38 game system.” He tweeted.

His tweet was in response to an interesting stat, which shows Man City have only led the table for 14 nights this season, compared to Arsenal’s 247.

Sections of fans were quick to call out Fong’s take, as they argued that the team with more points in a 38-game league campaign should be crowned champions.

But Fong was quick to further his point, adding,

“I’m not suggesting eradicating goals, but I think the idea can be developed. Rugby has a 2 point conversion, cricket has 1-6, NFL has kickers, basketball has 2’s and 3’s. Why just 1 goal or nothing? Could have 0.5 goals most possession, 0.75 best bit of skill etc. just an idea.”

Arsenal star in tears after Southampton draw

Sports Brief also reported on how Arsenal stars could hardly control their emotions after the full-time whistle of their Premier League clash against Southampton on Friday evening, April 21.

The north Londoners were hoping to return to winning ways against the relegation-threatened Saints, having dropped points in their last outing against West Ham United.

However, the Gunners faltered yet again, with two late goals from Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard rescuing a point for them at the Emirates.
