  • PSG slipped to an unexpected defeat at home to FC Lorient
  • Kylian Mbappe scored a controversial goal, but Lorient defied the odds to stun their illustrious opponents
  • It was the ninth defeat for Christophe Galtier's charges across all competitions in the calendar year

Paris Saint-Germain saw their three-game winning run snapped by 10th-placed Lorient at home, with the visitors handing the Ligue 1 leaders a chastening defeat.

Les Parisiens have endured a topsy-turvy second half of the season, picking only nine points from their last five games to highlight their shocking slump in form.

Goals from Enzo Le Fee, Darlin Yongwa and Bamba Dieng rendered Kylian Mbappe's freak equalizer a consolation as Lorient stunned PSG at the Parc des Princes.

Mbappe's controversial equalizer

Kylian Mbappe temporarily managed to claw PSG back into the game via a controversial equalizer. The 24-year-old knicked the ball from goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo before poking home from close range.

Mbappe lurked around the goal area of Lorient, sensing the goalkeeper will commit an error, and he was proved right when the latter let his guard down, gifting the PSG marksman the easiest goal he will ever score all season.

Despite the controversial nature of the goal, Mbappe's goal stood, but it proved to be a case of much ado about nothing as Lorient sealed a stunning 3-1 win.

Hakimi's red card proved costly

Achraf Hakimi, touted as one of the best right-backs in the modern game, cost PSG their recent embarrassing defeat at the Parc des Princes.

His two relatively daft challenges led to an early send off which played into the hands of Lorient, who made the Ligue 1 leaders pay for their mistakes, running out 3-1 winners.

Prior to his early exit, PSG were down by a 15th-minute strike from Enzo Le Fee, which was the recipe for what was to be served at the end of the match.

Messi-Mbappe over-reliance

Christophe Galtier's blushes, especially in the second half of the 2022-23 campaign, have been bailed out by Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi on one too many occasions.

The pair have single-handedly carried Les Parisiens to a record-extending 11th Ligue 1 crown with Mbappe's goals and Messi's playmaking skills.

Unfortunately, the duo were kept at bay by a resolute and disciplined performance from Lorient, leaving them to feed on crumbs as PSG suffered an embarrassing loss at home.

PSG's weak bench comes to bare

For a side with deep pockets, ready to splurge the cash on the transfer market, PSG's current bench is an absolute sham in direct comparison to the starting lineup.

With all due respect to the likes of Fabian Ruiz, Ekitike and Zaire-Emery, they are a complete downgrade of Mbappe, Veratti, Marquinhos and Leo Messi.

Christophe Galtier is virtually rendered clueless when their plan A is foiled by the opposition, with no proper option from the bench to help change the destiny of the game when the going gets tough.

Masterclass performance from Lorient

With a clear-cut plan, Lorient knew they couldn't match their illustrious opponents toe to toe. Hence carving out a well-laid-out approach to dealing with the threat of PSG's goalscoring outlets.

Coach Le Bris' men first cut out Achraf Hakimi, with the Moroccan receiving his marching orders after 20 minutes, while Messi and Mbappe were not afforded enough time to conjure their magic.

While it took a collective effort to stop PSG's star-studded team from finding their rhythm, they also did their bargain on the other side, scoring two goals in the first half before adding a third in the dying embers of the game.
