BREAKING NEWS: Mamelodi Sundowns has lost a match!

WE REPEAT: Mamelodi Sundowns has lost a match! The Brazilians were upset 2-1 in a Nedbank Cup quarterfinal classic by Stellenbosch FC at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday evening. Lee Langeveldt's own goal in the 39th minute put the visitors in the lead before Iqraam Rayners' brace (48th and 57th minutes) powered the Maroons past the defending champions.

This was Sundowns' first loss since being eliminated by Orlando Pirates from the MTN 8 semifinals last October, a run of 24 matches. This led to one sharp football fundi to point out on Twitter which outfits seem to trouble them.

@Thathisi said on his account:

"Teams Sundowns struggle against: - Cape Town City - Stellenbosch FC - Supersport United Common denominator? - Defensively organised teams that have clear and repeated attacking patterns - They choose the right moments to press Win/lose/draw, they remain true to the game models.
- Defensively compact - Fearless in offensive transitions - Press like maniacs in identified areas"

Following the loss, Mokwena said according to Goal:

"Today we didn’t deserve to win and that is a competitive sport. If someone is better than you, you put your hands up, congratulate them and wish them all the best.
"They were not much better, but they were better. We lost a lot of the duels today, from the first minute but okay we go [on], as I said congratulations to Stellenbosch and wish them all the best."

Sundowns go off the boil

The defending champions of the DStv Premiership have clearly taken the foot off the pedal since winning the title for a sixth consecutive season (13 since 1996).

Having done so in record time, Sundowns have drawn three matches and lost one as their motivation wavers.

However, the promise of winning the CAF Champions League for a second time should reinvigorate them, starting with the quarterfinal against Algerian giants CR Belouizdad.
