  • Lionel Messi is in the final months of his Paris Saint-Germain contract and is yet to sign an extension
  • The 2022 World Cup winner joined the French outfit after leaving Barcelona in 2021
  • There are reports he could return to his former club if they can find financial solutions

Lionel Messi has remained tight-lipped over his future amid a contract standstill with Paris Saint-Germain and reports of a return to his former club Barcelona.

The 35-year-old was forced to leave Blaugrana in 2021 after they could not register his new contract due to financial complications. He joined PSG on a two-year contract.

His PSG contract expires in June, and he is yet to agree to a new one despite the open desire of the Paris outfit to keep him at the club beyond the end of the current season.

As reported by Marca, there was an agreement in principle to extend the contract for an additional year before he jetted off to Qatar, but his success at the Mundial has changed things.

Messi tight-lipped over his future

Fans have believed that the body language of the Argentina captain towards football has changed since winning the World Cup, with many suggesting he is done with football mentally.

Forbes reported that the 2021 Copa America winner received a $440million offer from Al Hilal to join Cristiano Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia, but he rejected it as he wanted to remain in Europe.

Messi recently did a campaign for designer outfit Louis Vuitton and was asked about his future and claimed he does not know what is next, according to Sportskeeda.

“I don’t know what’s next, what my future holds. I like to imagine, to think about things that might happen, but I really don’t know what my future will be. Whatever God wants it to be, it will be,” he said.

Cahill wades into GOAT debate

As Messi remains undecided on his future, a former Chelsea star can not decide who the greatest of all time is between Messi and long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

As Sports Brief reported, Gary Cahill can't decide on the GOAT but instead praised the two phenomenal athletes who have been the face of football in the last 20 years.
