  • The Gauteng Future Champions tournament is a much-loved fixture of the Easter weekend annually
  • As the name suggests, the stars of tomorrow from across the world get to make their name in Soweto
  • In 2017, a memorable but ugly incident lit up the tournament that Atletico Madrid would eventually win

Ouch. Absolutely "ouch"!

That is what one can only remark when watching a video of one of the worst tackles in football history.

A video has reemerged on YouTube of Mamelodi Sundowns junior player Zaba Nxumalo obliterating NPFL All Stars play Rafiu Ishaq during a testy Gauteng Future Champions encounter in Soweto back in 2017.

Ishaq goes up for a header inside the Sundowns box, when Nxumalo inexplicably - but impressively showing off amazing athleticism - tries a bicycle kick-style clearance. He then connects with Ishaq's cheek, before the referee points to the spot for a stonewall penalty. Remarkably, the Nigerian player would be sent off for needless but understandable retaliation, while his South African opponent did not face any further sanctions.

The penalty would then be buried, with the visitors booking their place in the final against Atletico Madrid, who would emerge victorious.

Youngster scores from a corner kick

Sports Brief also reported on a remarkable moment in the junior levels of South African football.

Lungelo Msweli has put his name forth for the DStv Diski Challenge goal of the season for the 2022/23 campaign. The Richards Bay FC player scored one of the rare goals in football, hitting the target from a corner kick in a match against KwaZulu-Natal rivals, Golden Arrows.

Incredibly, Msweli had just been substituted on the field just seconds earlier, meaning that was his first touch of the game. Fittingly, he sealed a 3-1 victory for the Rich Boyz with another stunner late in the match, in what was a bona fide super-sub performance.

Xoki's miss of the season

While Msweli was scoring a sensational goal in one part of KwaZulu-Natal, Tapelo Xoki was embarrassing himself in another, Sports Brief reported.

In a DStv Premiership encounter between Orlando Pirates and Richards Bay FC, the Buccaneers defender was guilty of a miss that will go down in history.
