The Super Eagles of Nigeria have dropped five places in the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday, April 6.
Previously ranked 35th in the world, Nigeria dropped to 40th, their lowest in almost four years.
The drop could be attributed to their poor performance against Guinea-Bissau in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria lost 1-0 at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja to the lowly-ranked Djurtus but fought back in the reverse fixture win 1-0 away from home.
According to the latest rankings, the three-time Africa Cup of Nations winners are now the sixth-best team on the continent.
North African side Morocco continued their impressive run as they maintained their number one spot on the continent and 11th in the world.

The Atlas Lions are followed by second-place Senegal, who also moved one place in the world to 18th.
Nigeria ranked most expensive African team
The Super Eagles of Nigeria, who are three-time African champions, have been ranked as the most expensive national football team on the continent according to data from Transfermarkt.
Despite the Super Eagles currently occupying 13th position in the FIFA rankings, they came first as far as how valuable their players are in the world.
With Nigeria in the first place, Morocco climbed to second place on the continent thanks to a history-making appearance in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Sports Brief earlier reported that former Arsenal star Alex Iwobi believes it would be very difficult for the Super Eagles to be beaten at home if Nigeria had better pitches for players to showcase their skills.
The reaction from the Everton attacking midfielder came days after the Nigerian national team were beaten in Abuja by Guinea-Bissau in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
