  • The Super Eagles were beaten by Guinea-Bissau at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers
  • Nigerian international Alex Iwobi has now explained that no team would beat them if the country had good pitches
  • The three-time African champions are back at the top of their group in the AFCON qualifiers with nine points so far

Former Arsenal star, Alex Iwobi believes it will be very difficult for the Super Eagles to be beaten at home if Nigeria had better pitches for players to showcase their skills on.

The reaction from the Everton attacking midfielder came days after the Nigerian national team were beaten in Abuja by Guinea-Bissau in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

In that game, the likes of Iwobi, Victor Osimhen, and Ademola Lookman all failed to rescue the Super Eagles from suffering an embarrassing home loss.

However, the three-time African champions bounced back with a 1-0 win in the return leg against Guinea-Bissau, with Moses Simon's penalty giving Nigeria the win.

In a Q&A video on Instagram, Iwobi was seen answering questions in the studio when he stated the pitches in Nigeria were not very good.

Iwobi calls for quality pitches

"If we had good pitches in Nigeria, it’ll be difficult to beat us. I’m confident to say that. Not many teams could beat us. We should have permanent good pitches in Nigeria with levelled grass because many of us play in Europe and we are used to good pitches."

Iwobi's comments appear to suggest that the loss at home in the AFCON qualifiers would have been avoided had the pitch been of a better standard.

NFF pays Peseiro three-month wages

On the topic of the Super Eagles, Sports Brief reported on coach, Jose Peseiro being paid $210,000 (about N156,400,000) by the Nigerian Football Federation.

This represents three months of his salary out of a reported 10 months in wages he is said to be owed by the country for his services with the national team.

The Portuguese tactician was appointed as Super Eagles coach in May 2022, after the three-time African champions failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.
