  • Bruno Saltor will oversee Chelsea's first team training on an interim basis
  • The Spanish coach has been part of Graham Potter's backroom staff since his Brighton days
  • His first game will be against an equally struggling Liverpool side at Stamford Bridge

The last time Chelsea appointed a bald-headed coach midseason, they won the Champions League. These are the kind of theories Chelsea fans will probably throw at you to try and diminish the lacklustre season they have had.

Bruno Saltor is set to become Chelsea's third coach this season following the dismissals of Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter.

Saltor joined Chelsea in September and was part of Potter's technical staff. He has now been handed the reins of the club, albeit on an interim basis, as the Todd Boehly-owned club looks for a permanent successor.

Immediate former Bayern Munich Head Coach Julian Nagelsmann and former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique are believed to be the frontrunners. The club could also seek an audience with Mauricio Pochettino.

Saltor's profile

However, before all that happens, Saltor will be in charge when Liverpool come visiting on April 4th. For a person who has never picked a starting eleven before, let alone managing a club of Chelsea's stature, this is bound to be a baptism by fire.

But who is Saltor? Saltor is a former professional player who played as a right-back. The right-back only retired in 2019 before venturing into coaching under Potter at Brighton.

In his playing days, he had spells at Espanyol, Almeria and Valencia before captaining Brighton to top-flight football in 2017.

Saltor's managerial debut

Against Liverpool, he will be tasked with making the final decisions for the first time in his career. There is nothing much to write about his tactics and it will be interesting to see if he will stick with Potter's back-three formation. Forgotten players under Potter, like Trevoh Chalobah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, might also get a look-in.

This might be his only game in charge, with Chelsea expected to appoint a successor imminently ahead of the double-legged Champions League quarterfinal clash against Real Madrid.

Should he remain past this week and the next, Chelsea fans will be hoping that he can pull off a Roberto Di Matteo trick in 2012 and guide the club to its third Champions League success.

What a story that would be. A complete managerial novice winning Europe's biggest prize within the first three months of his first job.

Well, Chelsea fans can only dream. A bald head has delivered the trophy before; why not Saltor?

Managers who could replace Potter

Sports Brief has also reported that Chelsea have embarked on an elaborate plan to find a permanent replacement for Graham Potter.

The Blues are currently without a substantive manager after Potter was shown the door on Sunday evening.

Potter was axed just hours after he had led the west London club to a 2-0 embarrassing defeat against Aston Villa earlier on Saturday.
