Mubarak Wakaso travelled from Belgium to Ghana to witness the final funeral and burial rites of best friend Christian Atsu.

Atsu was laid to rest in his hometown in Ada on March 17, 2023.

The former Ghana international sadly passed away after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Turkey and Syria on February 6, 2023.

His lifeless body was recovered from under the rubble of his apartment after the building he was living in collapsed.

Atsu's bestfriend in the national team has been Wakaso, who warmly welcomed him to the Black Stars when he first made his debut in June 2012.

Wakaso, who plays for Belgium First Division A side KAS Eupen, sought permission from the club to be around for his friend's burial.

In a video shared on social media, Wakaso was filled with emotions as he walked to pay say his goodbyes.

Wakaso shared a tweet from the ex-footballer as he revealed how sad he was.

"I was glad when they said to me, let's go to the house of the lord. My strength comes from the lord. If not you Oh lord, I can't imagine where I will be, Thank you God," he posted.

Atsu made 65 appearances for the Black Stars, scoring nine goals for the national team.

John Paintsil in tears at Atsu's funeral

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Former Fulham and West Ham defender, John Paintsil broke down in uncontrollable tears after arriving at the State House for Christian Atsu's funeral.

The ex-Ghana international was teammates with the winger at the national team, where the duo created memories together.

However, on February 18, Ghanaians were left in a state of shock after Atsu's lifeless body was recovered from the rubble of his collapsed apartment.

Adebayor pays respect to Atsu

Former Arsenal and Real Madrid forward, Emmanuel Adebayor travelled to Accra for the final funeral of late Ghanaian winger, Christian Atsu.

Adebayor was friends with the late footballer before his unfortunate passing last month.

Atsu was tragically killed following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Turkey and Syria on February 6.
