  • Erik ten Hag labelled Arsenal lucky this season in terms of squad selection
  • It did not take too long after that for two injuries to stun the Gunners' camp
  • Mikel Arteta's squad was knocked out of the Europa League via penalties

Arsenal are having a brilliant season, exceeding both their team targets and the expectations of their rivals.

The Gunners have gone from a side that missed out on Champions League qualification by two points last season, to a team dominating the division.

Arsenal have not been good in cup competitions however, having been eliminated from both domestic cup competitions - the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup - and the UEFA Europa League after losing 5-3 to Sporting CP on penalties.

Did ten Hag curse Arsenal?

Speaking to reporters ahead of their Europa League game against Real Betis, Manchester United boss, Erik ten Hag said Arsenal have been lucky with injuries this season compared to his side, as quoted by Goal.

“When you see all season we have had some setbacks, every time we've dealt with it. Every other time it's been one player suspended, injured, or unavailable through illness. We have to deal with it well but Arsenal, all the time their squad is totally available,” he said.

What happened to Arsenal?

Arsenal exited the Europa League, which was made worse after losing two key players to injury in the opening 20 minutes of the game, as reported by Mirror UK.

Japanese right-back, Takehiro Tomiyasu was the first to depart in the ninth minute before French centre-back, William Saliba also limped off.

As reported by Football London, Mikel Arteta gave worrying updates about the injuries to his two defenders, with Tomiyasu possibly suffering the worst.

“Tomiyasu looks pretty serious from his reaction straight and what he said to me, but obviously, it’s very early. Willy, I don’t know; he had some discomfort and could not continue, so we had to take him out,” he said.

Odegaard sends message to Martinelli

It is apparent Arsenal had a night of sheer ill luck, with European elimination adding to two injuries.

The team also has to worry about the mental state of Gabriel Martinelli, who missed his penalty kick.

As Sports Brief reported, Martin Odegaard sent the Brazilian a message of support after the match.
