Karim Benzema is set to miss Real Madrid’s La Liga tie this weekend against Espanyol after failing to recover in time from an ankle injury he suffered earlier.

The 35-year-old forward who contributed 40 goals to Real Madrid’s success last campaign has been plagued with multiple injuries in the 2022/23 campaign.

According to Football Espana, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has now confessed that Benzema’s continuous absence has affected the La Liga champions negatively this season.

“It is inevitable that it affects because Karim is a very important footballer. He has not yet reached the level of last season, but I think that we solved it well in the first round. He will be important until the end of the season.”

Benzema has played just 15 La Liga matches out of the 24 games Real Madrid has played in the Spanish topflight owing to several niggling injuries.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid are monitoring Tottenham Hotspur forward Richarlison as an option to reinforce the the club’s attack in the summer following the major injuries suffered by Karim Benzema, Madrid Universal reports.

The Brazilian international has been on the agenda at Real Madrid ever since Carlo Ancelotti took over the reins of the club in 2021.

Richarlison has had a difficult time at Tottenham, having had to compete with Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski for playing time.
