  • Chelsea defeated Dortmund to book a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals
  • Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz helped the Blues overturn the deficit to advance
  • Chelsea fear they might not win the Champions League due to a 'Dortmund curse'

Chelsea recorded a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund at Stamford Bridge to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Tuesday, by 2-1 on aggregate.

Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz got the goals as the Blues relieved the pressure on embattled manager, Graham Potter.

However, the Stamford Bridge outfit might have to deal with the supposed 'Dortmund curse' for the rest of the competition.

Unfortunately, those teams failed to win the tournament in all four instances.

The BVB curse

In the 2018/19 Champions League, Tottenham Hotspur eliminated Dortmund in the round of 16. Mauricio Pochettino's side progressed to the final that season for the first time in history, but lost 2-0 to Liverpool.

The following season, Paris Saint-Germain fought back to record a 3-2 aggregate victory over the Germans. The Parisians went ahead to reach the final of the competition, only to lose 1-0 to Bayern Munich thanks to a Kingsley Coman strike.

Manchester City suffered a similar fate in the 2020/21 campaign after they lost 1-0 to Chelsea in the final. Prior to that stage, Pep Guadiola's side had knocked out BVB in the round of 16.

Just last season, Dortmund participated in the Europa League and were defeated by Scottish giants, Rangers in the knockout stage. The Teddy Bears made it to the final and were stunned by another Bundesliga side, Eintracht Frankfurt.

How Chelsea defeated BVB

Knowing what was at stake, Potter's charges flew out of the blocks from the whistle, with Atletico Madrid loanee, Joao Felix and Havertz causing trouble for Dortmund.

Chelsea had a first goal ruled out for offside before Sterling broke the game's deadlock after 43 minutes.

After recess, it was a giddy affair, with both sides cancelling each other out until the home side grabbed the second goal via a twice-taken penalty from Kai Havertz.

His goal proved crucial as the Blues held on to secure a ticket to the last eight of the competition by the scruff of the neck.

Bellingham slams referee

Borussia Dortmund midfielder, Jude Bellingham has labelled Chelsea's controversial retaken penalty as a joke, Sports Brief also reported.

Havertz's strike caused controversy after Dutch referee, Danny Makkelie ordered the German forward to retake the kick due to encroachment.

The decision to retake the penalty got Bellingham livid, with the star slamming both the referee's verdict and Havertz's penalty technique.
