  • A second-half penalty from Kai Havertz saw Chelsea overturn the tie in their favour

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham has labelled Chelsea's controversial retaken penalty as a 'joke'.

The German giants were sent crashing after losing 2-0 to the Blues at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

The Yellow and Black won the first leg 1-0 heading into the reverse fixture but failed to hold onto their lead as Chelsea won 2-1 on aggregate to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Raheem Sterling broke the deadlock in the 41st minute, with Kai Havertz doubling Chelsea's lead from the spot eight minutes into the second half.

Havertz's strike came in a controversial fashion after Dutch referee Danny Makkelie ordered the German forward to retake the penalty due to encroachment.

The 23-year-old lanky attacker stepped up again and successfully buried his second penalty after missing his initial effort.

The decision to retake the penalty got Bellingham livid, who slammed the referee's verdict and Havertz's penalty technique.

"I've not seen the incident back. From where I was, it looked pretty close. I can't see where he can go with the hands. It's a yard or two away...", Bellingham told BT Sports after the game.
"The fact they've had a replay, it's a joke. When you have such a slow run-up, people will encroach. That's the game I suppose and he's made a decision."

Bellingham misses clear-cut chance

Bellingham was expected to boss the midfield after playing a crucial role in Dortmund's one-nil win in the first leg and his side's unblemished performance in 2023.

However, on his return to England, the 19-year-old was far from his best and missed a big chance to level the tie when he side-footed wide just before the hour mark.

Chelsea knocks out Dortmund

Sports Brief previously reported that Chelsea kept their season alive by beating Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to progress to the quarterfinals of the Champions League 2-1 on aggregate on Tuesday.

With a twice-taken penalty, Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz got the goals as the Blues relieved the pressure on manager Graham Potter.

Chelsea was guilty of trying to protect their advantage in the final quarter and relied on Kepa to bail them out as Wolf stung the palms of the Spaniard.
