  • Cristiano Ronaldo has been chosen as the greatest player in the history of the FIFA World Cup
  • Ronaldo has scored eight goals in 22 matches at the FIFA World Cup, scoring in every edition he has played in since 2006
  • Despite missing out on winning the 2022 Mundial, Ronaldo became the first player to score in five football World Cup tournaments

Cristiano Ronaldo is the "best-ever" FIFA World Cup player, according to Manchester City loanee Joao Cancelo.

Cancelo, who is currently on a loan at Bayern Munich, bestowed his Portuguese compatriot with the accolade in an interview with FIFA.

The 28-year-old defender believes no player in the history of the World Cup has had a bigger impact than the Al-Nassr captain.

"This is difficult. Really difficult, but I want to go with a Portuguese, Cristiano [Ronaldo]," he said.

According to GOAL, the marauding full-back also chalked a personal accolade when he was named in the FIFPRO XI for the first time at 2022 The Best FIFA Football Awards held in Paris on Monday, February 27.

He began the 2022-23 campaign on the books of defending Premier League champions Man City, but a fallout with manager Pep Guardiola led to his loan move to Bayern Munich.

Since joining the Bundesliga giants, Cancelo has mustered six appearances across all competitions, providing two assists in the process.

How has Ronaldo performed at the World Cup

Cancelo's choice of the greatest footballer to have ever featured in the history of the Mundial might raise a few eyebrows considering Ronaldo has never won the World Cup.

The furthest he has reached is the semifinal, back in 2006, when Portugal were beaten by France and subsequently missed out on the third spot to host Germany.

Nonetheless, the 38-year-old, who plays for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, became the first man to score in five football World Cups, per Olympics.

His landmark goal came against Ghana at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar when he netted the opener of Portugal's 3-2 win over the Black Stars.

Ronaldo picks WC over goals

Sports Brief previously reported that Cristiano Ronaldo is ready to support the Portugal team to win the World Cup, even if it requires him sitting on the bench for the national team.

The 37-year-old forward was named as a substitute by manager Fernando Santos as they thrashed Switzerland 6-1 in the round of 16.

Ronaldo has now revealed he will sign up for Portugal to win the World Cup, even if it means they will do it without his goals.
