Ex Ghana Coach Reveals Sacking Threats For Not Inviting Muntari and Boateng

Former Ghana coach, Kwesi Appiah has revealed that he was threatened with sacking for his reluctance to invite Sulley Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng to the team.

The ex-Black Stars manager alleged he was forced to invite the duo by the then president of the GFA Normalization Committee, Dr Kofi Amoah.

However, Appiah said he stood his ground by not handing either player a call-up, which he claimed had resulted in threats from the committee official.

Muntari and Boateng were sacked from the team camp during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil for misconduct, with Appiah in charge as coach at the time.

"[Dr Amoah] thought Sulley and Kevin-Prince should be part of the team, but you have to ask yourself whether these players you are talking about, are they playing actively, and if they are, are they in top form to compete at that level?" he told Joy Sports, as quoted by GHANASoccernet.

“I think they were very good players, especially Sulley - any time he’s in the team, he gives out 100% - but you don’t tell me to go and bring them as if I don’t know what I am doing; if you are better than the coach, you should have been the coach and be coaching the team."

Appiah said that when Dr Amoah tried to stress the point to him, the coach felt it was being suggested he didn't know how to do his job, adding the official's approach showed a lack of respect.

“He threatened to sack me, but I told him I am not afraid of being sacked. Those threats; I have heard them several times, but I’m not the type that those threats get to me,” he stated.

Appiah interested in Ghana job

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Appiah stating he is qualified enough to lead the Black Stars again, after re-applying for the vacant Ghana job.

The former Black Stars coach is hoping to make a return to the national team after Otto Addo stepped down after the World Cup.

According to Appiah, he was persuaded to re-apply for the job, due to no Ghanaian coach apparently showing interest in the top role.
