Bruno Fernandes Hits Back at Claims He Aimed Dig at Cristiano After Derby Win

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has taken to clarify his comments from Saturday while slamming media sections for misinterpreting him.

Fernandes was on target as Manchester United beat City 2-1 in a fiercely contested derby which was marred with controversy over the Portugal star’s goal.

After the match, Fernandes, 28, spoke on BT Sport where he was full of praise towards his side, who climbed to third on the log following the win.

"Now we look like a team, we work for each other. A few months ago, it wasn't like that. We used to be individualistic.” He said as quoted on Manchester Evening News.

Fernandes’ comments were pretty straightforward on surface level, but sections of the media took his words as a sly dig at Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo’s contract with Manchester United was terminated in November 2022 and the 37-year old has gone on to join Saudi Arabia giants Al Nassr.

Since Ronaldo’s departure, which as at the end of a defeat to Aston Villa, United have won all their matches across three different competitions.

Amid reports that he was taking jabs at Ronaldo, Fernandes took to social media to clarify his comments, saying:

"Thanks to some for posting exactly the words I said. I know it's hard to watch Manchester United do well and they have nothing to talk about us apart from good things. Don't use my name to attack Cristiano! He was part of our team for half the season and I have said in many interviews since Liverpool that we are acting as a team. We carry on," He wrote on Instagram

Premier League reveals why Fernandes’ goal stood

On Fernandes’ controversial goal, Sports Brief reported on the Premier League’s take on why it stood in the end.

"The flag went up, ref and linesman had a conversation, deemed no touch on the ball from Rashford and no impact on the defender being able to play the ball. VAR could not find evidence of clear and obvious error so supports the goal." A statement from the Premier League read.
