Ridiculous; absolutely laughable.

These are the words one can only use to describe a terrible decision that was made by the match officials, during a KwaZulu-Natal derby between Royal AM and AmaZulu in the DStv Premiership on Sunday afternoon.

Thwihli Thwahla wing, Motebang Sera soundly beat Usuthu goalkeeper, Veli Mothwa with a fierce swerving shot. However, the ball hit the underside of the crossbar before harmlessly bouncing away.

Confusingly, the referee blew the whistle and while everyone assumed there had been a foul inside the box, it then dawned on players and coaches that he and his assistant had somehow awarded a goal.

Pandemonium erupted, as AmaZulu players and coaches remonstrated with the referee, while Royal AM players celebrated their good fortune.

The commentators called it 'the worst decision in the history of South African football', as viewers at home were stunned by what was unfolding before their eyes.

Common sense then prevailed as referee Christopher Kistoor and his assistant then chalked the goal off.

AmaZulu coach, Romain Folz had stormed off the field into the change rooms in protest, before coming back as the dust settled and order was restored.

He said to IOL:

"I have no idea what happened over there; the goal was allowed and then disallowed. It was a matter of four or five minutes where no one knew what was happening. The only problem I have there, and it's a big problem, is me going to the fourth official five minutes after and asking for the score, and him telling me it was 2-0 when it was still 1-0."

Folz said he then affected changes to the team, after which play resumed and Royal AM scored what to his knowledge was a third goal.

"...It was actually the second goal, because [the official] lied or didn't know what was happening."
