We are barely three days into the new year yet we already have a contender for the worst set piece routine of 2023.

A high school football team in Japan is responsible for the said set piece, which is fast going viral on social media for all the wrong reasons.

Takagawa Gakuen High School is known for trying out odd free-kick routines, and they were at it again recently during this month’s Japan High School Soccer Tournament.

The trio is holding hands as they skip in a circle for a few seconds, but when it finally came down to strike the free kick, one of the players hit a tame shot which trickled harmlessly wide.

Interestingly, there was a similar routine that went viral on December 29 2021, but this time, it worked wonders as the team actually scored from it.

As reported on SportBible, the All Japan High School Soccer Tournament is an annual event featuring 48 teams across Japan.

It is the largest-scale amateur sport event in Japan and takes place in two weeks between December and January.

The Portugal captain was among the top ten players in the world with a rating of 90 when the game was inaugurated back in October last year.
