Romelu Lukaku has revealed his preferred candidate for the vacant Belgium managerial position.

Roberto Martinez left his position as head coach of the Red Devils on the back of a disastrous 2022 World Cup campaign.

Since his departure, the Belgium FA has been on a hunt for a new trainer, with names such as Vincent Kompany mooted for the job.

"For me, Henry is the next coach of Belgium. There are no doubts," Lukaku told Sky Italia as quoted by Tribuna. "I say it openly: he will be the next coach."

The forward said Henry had the distinction of having won everything, and had the respect of many players.

"He knows how to coach, he knows what we have to do to get there. He knows the team, the league, the staff. For me, he is the ideal coach for our national team."

While Lukaku was not sure who would be hired if not Henry, he did not agree it was worth Belgium beginning from square one.

"So far, this generation hasn’t won, but we have to keep trying to win. He wants to win, and I don’t think the federation is going to get a coach who wants to change everything and start from scratch."

A former Arsenal and FC Barcelona forward, Henry was Martinez's second-in-command from 2016 to 2018, with another stint from 2021 onwards, per Metro.

Belgium eyes Kompany as boss

Sports Brief earlier reported that Belgium's national team are reportedly looking to hire Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany as their new manager, to replace Roberto Martinez.

This comes weeks after the Red Devils suffered a horrible exit from the 2022 World Cup campaign, which forced him to leave the role.

According to an exclusive from the Sun, current Burnley manager Kompany is being lined up to take over managerial duties for his country.
