  • Cristiano Ronaldo continues to be linked to different clubs in Europe and beyond
  • He is yet to decide on his future after Portugal's elimination from the World Cup
  • A Portuguese club president claims no club in the country could afford Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo has been going through one of the most difficult times of his career in the past months and it does not seem to end soon.

Reports, which were later debunked by Ronaldo in his interview with Piers Morgan, suggested that he wanted to force a move away from Old Trafford as the club did not qualify for the Champions League.

The explosiveness of the interview led to his contract being terminated while he was already in Portugal's camp ahead of the World Cup.

The World Cup did not go as planned - Ronaldo scored just a goal and was benched for the final two games against Switzerland and Morocco - before the 2016 Euro winners were eliminated.

Ronaldo 'too expensive for Portugal'

One of the many rumours about Ronaldo in the summer was concerning a return to former club Sporting Lisbon, as reported by Sky Sports.

Sporting Lisbon rival, Porto FC's president Pinto da Costa has now dashed the possibility of the 37-year-old returning to play for his home country.

Da Costa made the comments to Portuguese publication Record, as reported by Daily Mail.

''It's up to him and the clubs interested, but in Portugal, nobody has the capacity to give him what he earns and still wants to earn. And he has value for that.''

Ronaldo earned £500,000 per week at Manchester United according to Daily Express, while the highest paid player in the Portuguese league - Otavio - receives less than £100,000 according to Capology.

Glazer appreciates Ronaldo despite interview

Sports Brief earlier reported that Manchester United co-owner Avram Glazer appreciates Ronaldo despite his fallout with the club.

The American acknowledged Ronaldo's contribution to the Red Devils and wished him the best for the future, even after the Portuguese blasted the Glazer family's ownership.

The five time Ballon d'Or winner continues to consider his options for a new club, with Europe still a possible destination.
