Despite Argentina's storied rivalry with Brazil, the former World Footballer of the Year was left in awe of La Albiceleste's amazing counter-attack finished by Alvarez, Barca Universal notes.

Alvarez, who has been a revelation of the tournament, broke on a counter from his own half before ploughing through the Croatian defence, then tucking away a 1v1 chance to double his side's lead.

Lionel Messi had earlier broken the game's deadlock via the penalty spot after Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic fouled an on-rushing Alvarez.

In a video making the rounds on social media, Ronaldinho was spotted applauding Alvarez for his stunning solo run, which put the South Americans into a commanding lead.

Brazil chief backs Argentina

Fernando Sarney, the vice president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), has thrown his weight behind Argentina to win the World Cup in Qatar.

The only South American nation remaining at the Mundial, after Brazil bowed out of the tournament in the quarter-final stage, are just two games away from achieving the ultimate.

La Albiceleste have been paired with 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia, who dumped the Samba Boys out of the tournament.

Ronaldinho receives a standing ovation

Sports Brief earlier reported that on November 19, 2005, Brazilian-born magician Ronaldinho single-handedly destroyed Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium and got a standing ovation from the local crowd.

Los Blancos were sitting on top of the La Liga table going into the duel, one point ahead of the Catalans, and were looking to widen the gap.

However, Ronaldinho was on top of his game, forcing thousands of Real Madrid fans to applaud the 25-year-old's marvellous efforts that night.
