Fernando Sarney, the vice president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), has thrown his weight behind Argentina to win the ongoing World Cup in Qatar.

Argentina - the only South American nation remaining at the Mundial after Brazil bowed out of the tournament in the quarter-final stage - are just two games away from achieving the ultimate.

La Albiceleste have been paired with 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia, who dumped the Samba Boys out of the tournament.

According to Gracenote Live, Argentina have a 41 per cent chance of winning the World Cup and despite the long-standing rivalry between them and Brazil, Sarney wants Lionel Scaloni's charges to win the tournament.

“We have to maintain unity. At the time of deciding, we are all Argentina. I hope they bring this title to South America,” the Brazil football chief said as quoted by Mundo Albiceleste.

Argentina reach World Cup semis

Argentina will face Croatia in the World Cup semi-finals after beating the Netherlands 4-3 on penalties, following a thrilling 2-2 extra-time draw on a night of high World Cup drama.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was the hero in the shootout after the South Americans let a two-goal lead slip in the final minutes of normal time, after Lionel Messi had put them on the brink of the last four.

Wout Weghorst scored two dramatic late goals for the Dutch, the second from an inventive free kick in the 11th minute of stoppage time, as the Netherlands fought back with seven minutes of normal time remaining to force extra time.

Ronaldo picks World Cup winner

According to Sportskeeda, the Brazilian legend believes France is now the favourite to win the tournament and believes Kylian Mbappe is their greatest weapon.
