England captain Harry Kane has reacted to England's painful exit from the 2022 World Cup. He says it will take time to get over the result.

The Three Lions were beaten 2-1 by defending champions France in the quarter-final and Kane missed the vital penalty which would've given his country a chance.

Gareth Southgate's team dominated the game for most parts but lacked the cutting edge in the final third.

Bukayo Saka was impressive throughout the game and it was his craft that resulted in Kane's first penalty for the Three Lions.

Harry Maguire's header from a free-kick brushed the outside of the post while Jude Bellingham's volley was expertly saved by Hugo Lloris, ESPN reports.

England had double the amount of shots France had with 16 and had three more on target. However, the French were clinical in a match with such fine margins.

Kane's reaction

The moment of the match was when the Tottenham Hotspur striker blazed his second penalty over the bar. He fell to his knees at the final whistle, knowing England's World Cup dream was over, again.

The 29-year-old took to Twitter to say it will take time for the heartbreaking loss to sink in. He took responsibility for the penalty miss.

"Absolutely gutted. We’ve given it everything and it’s come down to a small detail which I take responsibility for. There’s no hiding from it, it hurts and it’ll take some time to get over it but that’s part of sport."

He added that the harrowing experience will make them stronger in future.

"It’s about using the experience to be mentally and physically stronger for the next challenge."

Euro 2024 is the next major tournament the Three Lions will be looking at. Their team is made up of many young players who will have hit their prime by then.

For Harry Kane, the penalty miss will certainly haunt him for a long time.

Rooney's message to Kane

Sports Brief earlier reported on Wayne Rooney sending a consolation message to Kane after their 2022 World Cup ended in agony.

Rooney took to Twitter to send his message of support to the England players and also to congratulate Kane for matching his record.

"Absolutely gutted for the lads but proud of the way they’ve played this tournament and they should be proud."

He also congratulated Kane for matching his goalscoring record for England.
