Manchester United legend and former England captain Wayne Rooney has sent a message of support to current Three Lions captain Harry Kane after they bowed out of the 2022 World Cup.

Gareth Southgate's side outclassed the French for most of the game and will be disappointed not to go through. The hopes and dreams of England were on Kane's shoulder after the referee pointed to the spot.

Moreover, if he scored the penalty, he would become the outright highest-ever goalscorer for England, surpassing Rooney.

His first penalty, which he scored saw him equal Rooney's 53 goals for England. With an 84 per cent success rate from the spot, Kane was expected to convert it, according to Sky Sports.

Rooney's message to Kane

After the final whistle from Wilton Sampaio, Kane sunk to his knees knowing full well that things would've been different had he converted the penalty.

Rooney took to Twitter to send his message of support to the England players and also to congratulate Kane for matching his record.

"Absolutely gutted for the lads but proud of the way they’ve played this tournament and they should be proud. Congratulations to @HKane on equalling the record, he’ll be on his own soon and couldn’t think of anyone better to take over. Keep your head up Harry."

Historically, England players have missed penalties in big moments. David Beckham, Gareth Southgate, Paul Ince, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho have all missed penalties in major tournaments.

Why Kane missed the penalty

Sports Brief earlier reported on Kane explaining why he missed the penalty against France.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker said he had a plan of what to do when he gets two penalties in a game.

"It was just the execution on the night. The first one was great and the second one, I just didn’t quite hit it how I wanted to."

Kane said his penalty miss against France will for a long time but reiterated that he was proud of his teammates after another World Cup exit.
