  • Piers Morgan was at it again with a cheeky Lionel Messi-Cristiano Ronaldo comparison
  • The controversial media personality referenced Messi’s antics in Argentina's semi-final
  • Messi was an irate figure and at one point, mocked the Netherlands boss Louis Van Gaal

Piers Morgan ignited a massive debate on social media on Saturday, December 10, with suggestions that Cristiano Ronaldo was a greater target for media than Lionel Messi.

The controversial TV personality is an open Ronaldo fan, and has been publicly backing the Portugal superstar since the controversial interview that aired in late November.

On this occasion however, Morgan had something to say about Ronaldo’s arch-rival Messi.

“So yesterday, Lionel Messi abused the referee, abused the rival coach and abused one of his opponents. Methinks if Ronaldo did that, it would get a tad more media attention,” he quipped.

What did Messi do?

Messi went full savage mode on Friday, and he was overwhelmed with emotions for his nation following the victory over the Dutchmen.

At some point during the penalty shootout, Messi made his way towards Oranje coach Van Gaal, making a gesture suggesting the Netherlands boss 'talked too much', as Edgar Davids tried to calm things down.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward was also extremely frustrated with the match referee, and he made his feelings known. His tirade did not end there, as he finally ended his antics by calling out the Netherlands on their 'route 1 football'.

Van Gaal on Dutch future

Sports Brief also reported on Louis Van Gaal deciding to step down as the football manager of the Netherlands for the third time.

It was another bitter end to the Dutch’s World Cup hopes, as they were knocked out via a penalty shootout, despite doing brilliantly to come from two goals down against Argentina.

In his post-match press conference, Van Gaal made it clear he would be leaving the Oranje job after his nation’s World Cup exit.
