  • Cristiano Ronaldo's celebration of Bruno Fernandes' goal has sparked a fresh round of debate
  • A video of a 2007 match between Barcelona and Espanyol shows Messi using his hand to score
  • Fans of the two players continue to disagree over who is better, even in their advanced years

Cristiano Ronaldo fans have offered a rebuttal to their Lionel Messi counterparts, in the wake of the former trying to 'steal' a goal that wasn't his at the World Cup in Qatar.

Debate between Messi and Ronaldo is often sharply discussed, as it divides football fans down right the middle.

Ronaldo appeared to be convinced that he had touched a Bruno Fernandes cross, when Portugal played Uruguay in their second group game in Qatar. The goal was eventually awarded to Fernades, but Ronaldo appeared to disagree with the decision.

Whether he was joking or not, fans took the incident and lashed out at CR7. The Portugal captain has been on the receiving end for trying to take credit for something that wasn't his.

While Messi's fans presumably led such banter, a response of some sort was offered when a video of Messi seemingly scoring with his hand and celebrating wildly resurfaced online.

Messi's Hand of God

In 2007, Messi was at the centre of a controversial piece of refereeing, when he appeared to use his hand to score for Barcelona against Espanyol.

His actions were in the vein of Diego Maradona for Argentina in the World Cup a few years back.

In a time when there was no VAR, video replays show that Messi used his hand to guide the ball back into the back of the net, on a day when there was a three-way battle for the La Liga title.

Messi was still donning the number 19 jersey and was just starting off his career.

Fans have debated sharply the two incidents, but as the Messi-Ronaldo debates go, we doubt a definite answer will be arrived at soon.

Three times Ronald was robbed

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Portugal captain Ronaldo came under heavy criticism from fans, after he allegedly claimed Fernandes' opener in his side's 2-0 win over Uruguay.

Fernando Santos' side opened the scoring in the second half after Manchester United star Fernandes floated a cross into the box.

The ball flew past Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet, with Ronaldo wheeling in celebration as if he'd got the final touch with a glancing header.

Ronaldo goal: Adidas deliver verdict

Adidas have used a sensor inside the World Cup ball to reveal who actually scored Portugal's first goal against Uruguay.

The Selecao cruised to a 2-0 victory over La Celeste at the Lusail Stadium, to qualify for the World Cup round of 16 on Monday night.

Santos' side opened the scoring in the second half, after Fernandes floated a cross into the box towards Ronaldo.
