  • Casillas believes people have been quick to forget about all the veteran striker has done in his iconic career

Cristiano Ronaldo has been lauded by former teammate Iker Casillas, despite the ex-Manchester United star's fiasco at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo, 37, terminated his contract with the Red Devils by mutual consent after his explosive interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV.

The Premier League club released a 67-word statement on Tuesday evening, confirming they had reached an understanding with the Portugal star to leave the club.

Ronaldo was expected to see out the rest of his contract, only for United to release him seven months earlier than planned.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner was then savagely mocked by Vincent Kompany, with the Burnley manager suggesting he won't sign Ronaldo because 'he can't run'.

Casillas however, who played with Ronaldo at Real Madrid from 2009-2018, has claimed that his former teammate is still good enough to play at the top level.

"When people talk about Cris, they forget what he has done," the ex-Spain captain told Marca, via Goal. "Come on, he doesn't forget, because he knows what he's done. But I would always like him on my team. Cristiano still has the string to play at the highest level."

Ronaldo responds to United's decision

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Ronaldo broke his silence, following Manchester United's decision to terminate his Old Trafford contract.

United ripped apart Ronaldo's lucrative deal just days after his explosive interview with British journalist Piers Morgan.

The Portuguese star was in the final months of his stay with the Red Devils, having rejoined them in the summer of 2021 on a two-year deal.

Ronaldo to Chelsea?

A section of Chelsea fans has urged Ronaldo to consider Stamford Bridge, after news broke of his imminent exit from Old Trafford.

The veteran forward will now begin looking for a new club after the conclusion of the World Cup in Qatar.

While it still remains to be seen where Ronaldo will move next, some Chelsea fans have taken the opportunity to beg the forward to join them.
