  • Belgium attacker Yannick Carrasco was the villain on Wednesday night as Atletico Madrid suffered Champions League elimination
  • Carrasco had the opportunity to seal victory for Atletico in the dying embers of the game against Bayer Leverkusen, only to spurn his chance from the penalty spot
  • The result means Atletico will have to beat FC Porto in order to secure a spot in Europe's secondary competition, the UEFA Europa League

Atletico Madrid suffered Champions League elimination in their penultimate group game against Bayer Leverkusen.

The La Liga outfit played out to a drama-packed 2-2 draw with Leverkusen, which proved inadequate to seal a spot in the last 16 of Europe's premier club competition.

However, Atletico could have had a completely different tale if Yannick Carrasco had not missed his stoppage-time penalty.

Diego Simeone's charges spurned the chance of securing the all-important win when Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky saved Carrasco's effort from 12 yards, as noted by Daily Mail.

Following the end of the game, Carrasco's missed opportunity has been making the rounds on the internet, with the footage garnering more than a million views.

In the video, spotted by Sports Brief, the Belgian forward's effort was parried away by the Leverkusen shot-stopper, with the follow-up from Saul Niguez agonisingly kissing the crossbar.

The save from Hradecky rendered the chaotic game a draw, and ensured FC Porto secured a spot in the knockout phase of the Champions League ahead of the Rojiblancos.

Atletico bow out of the Champions League for only the second time in the last 10 years, winning a single game, losing twice and sharing the spoils on two occasions, ESPN reports.

Atletico crash out of Champions League

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Yannick Carrasco missed a penalty that was awarded by VAR after the final whistle was initially blown, as Atletico Madrid crashed out of the Champions League, following a dramatic 2-2 home draw with Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday.

After Porto's 4-0 victory over already-qualified Club Brugge, Atletico needed three points to set up a winner-takes-all meeting in Portugal next week.

Despite fighting back from behind twice, the La Liga club somehow failed to find a winner and now face a battle with Leverkusen just for a Europa League place.
