Nunez is yet to live up to his billing since he joined the Reds from Benfica in the summer, with the star forward often coming under criticism due to his lack of incisiveness in front of the goal.

Wednesday night was no different for the Uruguayan as he missed a golden goalscoring chance during his side's trip to Ajax.

The visitors were leading 1-0 courtesy of Mohamed Salah's opener when Nunez was presented with the opportunity to double his side's advantage.

Firmino was the engineer of the big chance after he pulled the ball back inside the box to set up Nunez.

However, the Uruguay international somehow managed to miss the target when it looked easier to score.

The ex-Benfica ace saw his effort come off the post - much to the disbelief of fans, including Firmino.

Firmino was caught on camera dumbstruck at how his teammate had managed to miss the open goal, with hawk-eyed fans spotting the moment.

Darwin Nunez redeems himself

Fortunately for Nunez, he was able to make amends in the second half as he drove home a powerful header shortly after the break to make it 2-0.

Harvey Elliot put the game beyond the hosts shortly after as the Reds roared to a 3-0 comfortable win.

The victory booked the Jurgen Klopp-tutored side a spot in the knockout round of the European tournament with a match to spare.

Liverpool are scheduled to host Napoli at Anfield in their last Group A fixture next week.
