An Ajax player has gone viral, after he was caught on camera tickling Liverpool player Virgil van Dijk's armpits during their Champions League clash.

Stakes were high when the two teams locked horns on Wednesday night, with each eyeing a win for a chance to book a spot in the tournament's knockout round.

So vital was the fixture that at one point, Davy Klaassen resorted to some unusual tactics to stop Van Dijk during the tie.

The Ajax midfielder was caught on camera tickling his Netherlands teammate's armpits as they waited for a set piece to be taken.

The hilarious moment left fans in stitches as they quickly took to social media to react.

One posed:

"Did a man just try and tickle Van Dijk?"

A second joked:

"Klassen tickling Van Dijk to see if he real human being."

Another wrote:

"I know I did not just see man tickle Virgil van Dijk's armpit."

Liverpool sink Ajax

Unfortunately for Klassen, his unusual tactics did not bear fruit, as Liverpool went on to hammer his side 3-0.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring goal for the visitors in the first half, and Darwin Nunez doubled the advantage shortly after the break.

Harvey Elliot put the game beyond Ajax in the 52nd minute as the Reds stormed to a comfortable win. The victory was enough to send the Premier League giants to the round of 16 with a match to spare.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Darwin Nunez once again made himself the topic of conversation, during Liverpool’s Champions League trip to Ajax on Wednesday.

The Uruguay international missed an absolute sitter in the first half, but went on to score a stunning goal later on.

Liverpool cruised to victory, although they might have to settle for second place in Group A.
