Nigeria vs Colombia: Flamingos Lose Out 6–5 on Penalties in the World Cup Semifinal Clash

Nigeria's Flamingos have been defeated 6-5 on penalties by Colombia, in the semi-final of the Under-17 FIFA Women's World Cup in India, in what is a painful loss for the West Africans.

Going into this semi-final clash, the morale of the Nigerian players was boosted by the presence of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Ibrahim Gusau, who landed in India on Tuesday morning, October 25.

The Flamingos started the match impressively against Colombia, but the South Americans took charge of the game just after 10 minutes.

Nigerian goalkeeper Faith Omilana made good saves to deny Colombia's girls from scoring in the first half, with the first 45 minutes ending goalless.

What was the second half score?

The Flamingos defended well in the second half, as the Colombians tried every trick to get the breakthrough.

Nigeria would have even scored the winner at the death when Taiwo Afolabi laid down a good pass for Edidiong Etim, but she was unable to score.

In the penalty shootout, Nigeria had the chance to win, but Omamuzo Edafe missed a decisive kick and Colombia went on to win 6-5.

Germany play Spain in the other semi-final later today (October 26).

NFF's Ibrahim Gusau arrives India

Earlier, Sports Brief had reported how the newly-elected president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Gusau landed in India to support the Flamingos at the semi-finals of the ongoing FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria defeated the United States via penalties in the quarter-final to set up a tantalising fixture against Colombia at the competition.

The former Zamfara State FA Chairman was in the stands when the girls filed out against the South Americans at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa, on Wednesday, October 26.

The Flamingos are the first Nigerian team to be involved in a tournament during the presidency of Gusau.
