The Nigerian girls started the match impressively, looking for ways to score an early goal against the United States, but they had to wait until the 26th minute before getting the breakthrough through Omamuzo Edafe, who scored via a penalty.

The American girls changed their style of play to a more attacking approach after conceding, and they restored parity in the 40th minute through Amalia Villarreal.
