The league then took a break for international football, but the break didn’t help as Schmitz netted again upon his return.
The defender was credited with scoring an own goal against Borussia Dortmund, though the decision was harsh, to be fair.
With Dortmund trailing 3-1 in the 78th minute, Tom Rothe attempted to cross the ball into the box. The ball deflected of Schmitz and looped over Marvin Schwäbe in the Köln net.
A tweet from Dortmund captured the moment perfectly as the ball struck Schmitz. While he never intended to score or had any control over it, the official match stats credit him with the goal.
The goal didn’t impact the game overall, though, as Köln ran out 3-2 winners. They trailed Dortmund at the break 1-0. through a Julian Brandt goal.
