- The Los Merengues were crowned the Spanish champions and European conquerors last season
- Real Madrid has spent over €2.3 billion in player signings since the start of the millennium, recruiting top stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema
Spanish giants Real Madrid have been named as the world's most valuable football club.
The Los Blancos have topped the Forbes' fresh list and are valued at $5.1 billion — $350 million more than last year. This means that Madrid's worth has gone up by 8 percent.
It is slightly higher than Madrid's arch-nemesis Barcelona, who are second on the list in terms of football clubs with a valuation of $5 billion, $100 million less than reigning European champions.
It is interesting to note that football teams have had a slight dip in terms of their positioning in the overall Forbes list that was published last year. But it appears Real Madrid and Barcelona have been able to increase their valuation.
